About

UNISON is Britain’s most effective trade union, representing 1.3 million people working in the UK’s public services. We negotiate better pay and conditions, help individuals in trouble and campaign for a safer, fairer society.

The Manchester Branch of UNISON supports well over 9,000 employees who help deliver public services in Manchester.  The Branch represents staff of all grades who work for Manchester City Council; from housing officers to teaching assistants, caretakers to library staff, environmental health officers to social and school support workers.

The Branch also represents members working for the voluntary and private sector in Manchester who provide services to the public, including for example Housing Trusts, Manchester College, Connexions and other local employers.

What is a trade union?

A trade union is an organised group of workers who have joined together to achieve common goals such as better working conditions, wages and a safer working environment.

UNISON has produced a useful flyer which sets out what a trade union is, why is makes sense for all employees to join one and the many benefits that trade unions have delivered for ordinary working people.  We have included this flyer below for information and it can be downloaded by clicking on this link.  Physical copies are also available upon request by sending an email to unison@manchester.gov.uk.
