As you will be aware there is to be a national referendum on 23rd June 2016 on whether the UK should leave or stay in the EU.
That date coincides with UNISON’s National Delegate Conference and the union has decided to ask Branches to consult members on what position, if any, UNISON should take in making any recommendation to members in the ballot.
Whilst UNISON has an established policy of opposition to the Maastricht and Lisbon treaties, and rejecting the European austerity programme inflicted in the past on Ireland, Greece and other nations, the central issue of whether to stay in or leave the EU has not been determined.
Branches have been asked to organise a consultation with members and to report back by 5th April 2016.
In order to allow members the maximum time to take note of the wider national debate the Branch has organised a Special General Meeting for all branch members to determine our Branch view and forward that to the national union.
The Special General Meeting will be at 5.30pm in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour, Manchester Town Hall on Monday 4th April 2016 and the debate will include speakers in favour of remaining in the EU and in favour of leaving the EU.
If you are unable to attend the Special General Meeting but want your views to count please complete the survey below by 10am on Tuesday 5 April 2016.
