Public services keep our communities strong, healthy and safe. Yet the coalition government is making reckless spending cuts which will condemn us to 400,000 public service job losses.
That’s the estimate of the government’s own Office of Budget Responsibility, but we believe that jobs are already disappearing at such a fast rate that the final number may be higher still.
And whatever politicians say, you can’t cut 400,000 jobs without a savage cut in the services we all rely on – whether that’s in our hospitals, schools, libraries, social services, elderly care or police services.
Making cuts this deep, this fast is a choice this government has made. UNISON believes there is an alternative, and if enough people speak up for local services the coalition will have to think again. We all need to make our voices heard and make the politicians listen.
